AMLO "ibid?
Denise Dresser article published today in Reforma. I hope the cavemen and ultras of the pseudo left to read.
AMLO "ibid? Denise Dresser
"I'll be back" threatens Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator. "I will again presidential candidate, Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced in recent days. And is good news because it should not be AMLO in 2012, or at least as it was in 2006. Hopelessly combative, confrontational, anti-institutional. Invariably atavistic, stubborn, conservative, stubborn. Someone whose positions are unclear, and often contradictory, have inspired a confidence that will be difficult if not impossible, to trace. Someone who got left in an alley which is finding it very difficult to leave, despite the successful electoral alliances of recent times.
For those who think-think-that Mexico should have a functional left, few things look as sad as the tragedy of self-sabotage for four years. The injury has been inflicted on itself since the last presidential election. The paper left suicide divided is determined to play. The PRD and the PT and Convergencia caught in a logic of constant confrontation with each other and without knowing exactly what to do with Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The PRD engine become your worst enemy. López Obrador become an advocate involuntary return of the PRI. AMLO responsible, not even weigh it, a regression that has contributed.
Makin 'wrong decisions, over and over again, that weaken his political position and strengthen the contrary, by making statements that detract from the transfer support and who wants to weaken but ends up shoring, denying the legitimacy of the PAN-PRD alliance but have become the only way to stop the PRI. AMLO as a driver counterproductive and self-destructive actor, a politician who heads a left paradoxical bent on empowering the PRI right. A left lopezobradorista that instead of acting as effective counterweight to the PRI revived, explains its progress.
This product of the post-election decision in 2006 that AMLO took, and therefore it is imperative to remember. It made no sense to require the recount and, at the same time, refusing to accept the results. It made no sense to denounce the illegality of the war and, at the same time, accept the advances of PRD in it. There was no point asking for a review of the election votes and, at the same time, suggesting a need to cancel. It was a good strategy to discredit the entire game and insist that he won. It was a good strategy to order the recount and also suggest that not respected. Not a good idea to hell with the institutions and thus alienating those who refused to believe that AMLO was dangerous and now think it is.
And if Lopez Obrador does not understand this, I hope that other members of the Mexican left themselves are able to do so. Hopefully realize that the project of nation that is proposed is too narrow, too exclusive, too monochromatic. Who wants to rule the country where there is only room for the poor. The candidate who has never said what it will do for the middle class and how to encourage their expansion. The redeeming features to alleviate poverty but does not explain how to create wealth. The social leader who does not know how to become a professional politician.
Do not understand the need to slide toward the center of the political spectrum and lead a modern and purposeful left from there. Unable to learn than just that brought to power Tony Blair and Felipe González and Ricardo Lagos and Michelle Bachelet. The transformation of historical grievances in the practical proposal. The reinvention of resentment in approach. The fight against inequality combined with measures to ensure mobility. But Lopez Obrador will not or can not think that way. For his obstinacy. For his stubbornness. Not to moderate their positions when it should. By threatening and blackmailing PRD legislators seeking to form a front against the PRI in Congress. Not to adjust its posture and position in the center pragmatic rather than dig into the left recalcitrant. To think that you do not need convincing, you can just exist.
This is a devastating diagnosis for those who believe that Mexico needs a left led by progressive leaders, bold, visionary. A left able to overcome the intransigence that strengthens the PRI instead of halting its advance. A left that it fuels the progressive change and not a pretext for the conservative restoration. A left with viable ideas and not just moral positions. A left who can speak to the middle classes rather than alienating them. A political force who can be viable opposition and government, because the country needs both. And if not, López Obrador can sing the Beatles song I'll be back and say "I'll be back again ... I want you, but we must respond with" Oh no. "
